History of Afternoon Tea
Legend has it that in the year 1840, Anna, the Duchess of Bedford, established the tradition of Afternoon Tea. There were long gaps between lunch and dinner and she suffered from "hunger spells" in the late afternoon and she asked that a tray of bread and butter, and cake be brought to her room. Anna began to invite her friends to join her and that became a favorite pastime of ladies of leisure.
